Swarm theory of leaves

Some days, the wind whips the leaves into amorphous clusters whose shapes seem arbitrary. Why aren't these objects of roughly equal mass spread evenly across the ground? Do slight undulations in the concrete cause these designs, or a slight differences in mass according to leaf species, or the curled, clasping edges of each brittle leaf?
